I found out the answer to my own question by reading the instructions (wow.
What a concept!).

Turns out I was overthinking it. All you do is turn your Zune on and then
press the same button (play/pause) again. It picks up right where you left
off, even if in the middle of a song. But according to the instructions, it
will only remember this for 24 hours.

I was trying to turn the thing on, go to Music, go to Playlists, pick a
particular playlist and then tried to figure out a way to get it to pick up
where it left off.
