    Movie Maker & Vista

When I burn a DVD using windows movie maker on windows vista, the dvd will
only play on the computer it was made on. It will not work on any other
computer or DVD player. Any ideas why not? Don't have this problem when
making a movie using movie maker on computer with windows XP.

Not totally sure what program you used to 'burn' your DVD. I use Windows
DVD Maker in Windows Vista to burn the DVD; it plays on my DVD player.
Windows Movie Maker, per se, does not create a DVD, it relys on DVD Maker.
It sounds as if you have not 'burned' a DVD, but you made a data disc. Can
    you give more information?

    Re: Movie Maker & Vista

Because I have had problems with windows DVD Maker (get error every time I
try to use it "class not registered") HP suggested using the copy/paste into
the dvd drive and said that SHOULD (!?!!) work, but evidently does not. I
know the older versions of Movie Maker on XP will burn right from the Movier
Maker to DVD and I really liked this much better, but probably only because
it always worked and now with this new computer and Vista AND Windows DVD
Maker not working properly or at all, things are just not working out too
well. I hope this may provide more information, but may produce another
problem with the Windows DVD Maker not working.

Kathy -- I do not think that Windows Movie Maker per se will burn a DVD that
will play on standalone DVD players, neither in XP nor in Vista. Of course,
you can copy/paste your video on to a DVD as a data disc, and that will play
in your computer DVD drive but not on a DVD player. For the 'class not
registered' problem I suggest you post your question in this web forum:
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/forums/. There are some experts there who
help people with Windows Movie Maker issues.

    XP has never made dvds.
Media centre used a sonic plug in, which could make dvds, similar to dvd
    maker.
Windows XP could not write a data dvd either.

    Burn a CD or DVD
If your computer includes a CD or DVD recorder, you can copy files to a
writeable disc. This process is called burning a disc. By default, Windows
burns discs in the Live File System format, but you can also choose to burn
    discs in the Mastered format.

    Note
    · You can use Windows to burn a data disc, which is useful for
storing, archiving, and sharing files among different computers. If you want
to make a disc that will play in a music or video player, you should burn
the disc using a music or video program.

To burn a disc using the Live File System format
1.Insert a writeable CD or DVD into your computer's CD or DVD recorder.

2.In the dialog box that appears, click Burn files to data disc.

3.In the Burn a Disc dialog box, type a name for this disc, and then click
    Next.

It might take several minutes for the disc to be formatted in the default
Live File System format. When the formatting is complete, an empty disc
    folder opens.

4.Open the folder that contains the files you want to burn, and then drag
the files into the empty disc folder.

You can copy files to the disc folder by dragging them to the disc icon or
    to an open disc folder

As you drag files into the disc folder, they are copied automatically to the
    disc.

To burn a disc using the Mastered format
Choose the Mastered format when you need a highly compatible disc that will
play in computers with an older version of Windows or in media devices such
as CD and DVD players that can read digital music and video files. For more
information about choosing a disc format, see Which CD or DVD format should
    I use?

    1. Insert a writeable CD or DVD into your computer's CD or DVD
    recorder.

    2. In the dialog box that appears, click Burn files to data disc.

    3. In the Burn a Disc dialog box, type a name for this disc, and then
    click Show formatting options.

    4. Click Mastered, and then click Next.

    An empty disc folder opens.

    5. Open the folder that contains the files you want to burn, and then
drag the files into the empty disc folder.

    6. On the toolbar, click Burn to disc.

The selected files are copied to the disc. When the disc burning is
complete, the disc burner tray will open and you can remove the disc. You
can now use the disc in another computer or media device. This type of disc
does not need to be closed.

    Tips
o To burn a Mastered disc, you need free space on your hard disk
equal to the capacity of the disc. For a typical CD, this is about 650
    megabytes (MB).

o If you select files to burn but decide not to copy the files to
disc, you can delete the temporary files to recover hard disk space. To
delete the files, open the disc folder, select the files, and then, on the
    toolbar, click Delete temporary files.

    Re: Movie Maker & Vista

OK - so I probably didn't make myself real clear. I have a PC with Windows
XP using WMM version 2.0. I can make a movie on this PC with absolutely no
problems, burn to a DVD and it plays on any computer or stand alone DVD
player. BUT, using my laptop with WMM version 6.0, I have no problems making
the movie, but when I go to burn, the screen automatically goes to Windows
DVD burner and then when I start to burn using Windows DVD burner, it gets
about 8% done and then I get the error message "class not registered". Yes,
I can copy/paste the movie directly into the DVD drive, but unfortunately
then it does not play on any other PC or DVD player. So I can either forget
about WMM on the laptop and just use my PC, but would really like to be able
to do on both computers. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

I have seen this "class not registered" problem discussed on the WMM forum
    at this URL:

There are real WMM experts there who can help; I am not one of them (but
