Media Player Just stopped working

Suddenly media player just won't launch, even with run as administrator. I
tried downloading media player for vista but it won't install saying there is
already a Newer (?) version on the computer. So I tried uninstalling the
existing version but it doesn't even show on the list of programs for
uninstall. Not sure where to turn. This happened once before but a reboot
fixed it.

Re: Media Player Just stopped working

You cannot uninstall WMP. It's part of the Vista OS.

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems which do not appear immediately.

RE: Media Player Just stopped working

Do you have a registry cleaner ? I had a similar problem and it's now fixed.
I used registry mechanic from pctools.com.

I tried rolling back to a systme restore point and it sort of worked but
then a lot ofother stuff started breaking. Since sorting out the registry,
everything's been ok.

It seems to be tha automatic updates that screw up the registry so much.

Re: Media Player Just stopped working

What was installed or uninstalled previous to this not working?

Does it (wmplayer.exe) show up in the Processes tab of Task Manager?

DO NOT use registry cleaners! See this:

Re: Media Player Just stopped working

Hey.
I had the same problem, Window Media Player would not start. It would just say "Windows Media Player has Stopped Working" or something similar to that.. Ya I searched all over the internet yet no luck. But I found out why it was not working/opening: The reason is simple, your computer has been infected with a virus. It might be one of these:

Click the image to open in full size.

You see, i had the same problem and after scanning the computer with Avast, these files were found as infected/trojan.

So I would suggest you to scan your computer and see if your scanner detects one of these files in the image above. Simply remove those files with the Virus Scanner and your Media Player will work again.

Re: Media Player Just stopped working

After installing KB952714 my media player stopped working. It seems to have reset the entire default system to use the 32 bit (x86) version which is making it crash. I redirected my program folders shortcut to the media player in the 64 bit program folder and it works from the shortcut again, however, the buttons in windows explorer still bring up a Windows media player has stopped working screen which says it will send information and never does. This is also true of the right click shortcut menu.

Re: Media Player Just stopped working

What's the current crash information for that crash according to the Problem
Reports and Solutions control panel on your system?

Re: Media Player Just stopped working

Whoa. How did you get the XP version of the player on your system? That
would indeed fail miserably. I'm sorry: I should have noticed that from the
"version" values there alone. This cannot work.

At this point you would likely want to run "sfc /scannow" from "cmd.exe" run
As Administrator: your system is corrupt as far as WMP is concerned.
