Vista - Photo gallery doesn't work

I have installed and reinstalled Vista ultimate 32 bit several times and
photo gallery has never worked at any stage. When I double click a picture
(jpg) photo gallery open and the vista timer starts.

Eventually an error message appears "the picture cannot be displayed. you
might not have enough memory available. Close some programs or, if your hard
disk is almost full, free some disk space and try again."

I have 2 x320gb hdds and 1 x 500gb + 4Gb of ram. The error message makes no
sense.

The slideshow function works fine though. I have trawled the net and found
lots of people with the same fault but not one answer. Can anyone help?

Live photo gallery works thanks. The other links dont help. I still have no
idea how to fix the photo gallery, pretty sad to have to use a different
program but oh well.
