Vista - No audio output device is intalled!

Yesterday, I installed updates. One of them was for the sound. After the
computer restarted, this is the message that I got. I tried restoring to
before the updates. I tried rolling back the driver. In the device manager
it says the driver cannot start (code 10).

I looked through other questions on this site. On a similar problem it was
suggested to re-install and gave the link to the site. I went there and
downloaded, but then it wouldn't open.

I am not a computer genius, just someone who is very frustrated with Vista.
This is the third time I've had a problem after an update. Each one to do
with the sound, each one a little different. I never had these problems with
my old computer.

Can anyone help?
