Vista - Cannot burn CDs or DVDs

I am using a Dell XPS 710 running Vista Home. I can drop and drag fine to
flash memory and to an external USB back up drive. However, I cannot drop &
drag to either the CD RW drive or the DVD RW drive. I also have tried to use
Roxio 9 to burn DVDs and CDs and it says insert a blank disc. It does not
matter if I use CD or DVD-R or RW. However, I did manage to get Media player
to write an audio CD

I also spent an hour and 1/2 with a Dell Tech uninstalling the drives and
nothing helped. Dell now suggests I restore the system to the original
factory condition and lose all my files and programs. I do no think this
function ever worked,so I am reluctant to go back to the original condition.

Any ideas on how I can get the cd and DVD burn function to work?

Have you tried not inserting a blank disk till after Roxio asks for it
instead of inserting one ahead of time?
