Vista - Recording with Windows Sound Recorder and Audacity

For one reason or another, i can't record sound. The driver for my line-in
isn't "recognized", so i can't use my microphone either. And what's up with
Vista's audio controls? they don't give you enough control . . . I've got an
HP pavilion (dv8327cl) Any ideas?

I noticed also that the microphone input is recognised but "not supported"
(on RC1). Seems to be a rather pointless exercise to have a recorder like
that.

I do a lot of recording, guitar etc. audacity, cakewalk and none of
recordings programs work. the mixer that was in xp is gone. this won't fly,
microsoft better wise up.
