Vista - WMM only plays for 1 second

Hi, I am new to Windows Movie Maker. I am on Vista with an HP pavilion.

I imported a movie that was .WMV format. I drag it down to the section
where it says 'drag media here'. I try to play it and it only plays the
audio/video for about 1 second, and that's it. Can't get it to do
anything else.

The same .WMV file plays fine outside of Windows Movie Maker. It plays
perfectly under Windows Media Player.

So, I imported a different video (different format) that was taken from
my cell phone. That one will play from start-to-finish inside of WMM,
but WMM will not let me splice it to remove the unwanted parts at all.
It "appears" as if I have spliced it at first. It has 2 halves of the
movie showing. I delete the unwanted portion. Then, I play what is left
and it is the entire movie ... unspliced!

I really want to be able to work with the one that is a WMV file. It is
my son's bday party and I was going to create a YouTube video of it for
him and his friends, overlaid with ColdPlay music. Dang.

Anybody had WMM only play the first millisecond of a WMV file and
nothing more?
