Hi,

I am absolutely going mad trying to fix this. I have purchased a laptop with
Vista Home Premium installed ( I am a Vista novice BTW). Created a new
profile for my partner ( mine is set up as the administrator) and transferred
some pictures to the Desktop. Few days later I couldn't see the folder
containing the pictures on the desktop; I tracked it back through the
explorer. I transfer them to the documents folder ad The next time it is
completely disappeared. Same happened with my pictures later on in my
profile. I have searched the pictures everywhere, nothing and of course I
have not deleted them, but they seem disappeared. I have tried a recovery
software and nothing. Now, recoveing pictures would be good, but avoiding
this happening again is my main concern. Can anyone help me?

If this can help, I have also noticed that when downloading the software I
use looses the link to the folder where the files are stored. it seems there
is something wrong with the default folders set up in my profile (Documents,
downloads, Pictures and so on).



Please, Please help me....

Your initial problem is very odd and I have no clue how to diagnose it. But for recovery, you can try Shadow Ecplorer ( ShadowExplorer.com - About ). If you have a restore point from the time before they disappeared, you can retrieve them. Here is a video tutorial I once made in case you need further guidance: ( Tutorial: Recover lost files with Shadow Explorer « How-To Geek Forums ).

Well, it is pretty weird. But is even weirder is that if had deleted any file
or if windows had done so those files should be in the bin. Anyway, it still
doesn't work using the shadow explorer.

Why can't you recover your files with Shadow Explorer. If you have restore points from the time before they disappeared, then you can recover them. Are the missing restore points the problem?

At the moment I don't have a recovery point prior to the day the files went
missing. When the files got lost I used the Backup and restore center to
recover the files, but again it didn't work. Then I installed Service pack 2
(in the aim of fixing it) which deleted the previous recovering points. Now,
shadow explorer can only see the restoring points since the installation of
service pack 2. However, as I aid the first thing I did was use the restore
center and I didn't work.

OK, understand. After the installation of SP2, the restore points are, of course, all gone. That was not such a swift design by Microsoft.

You might try My Computer /Start/My Computer to go to all the C: files.
put in a search for one of the pic file names. Once you have the files,
mark down the path.

A question? how are you transferring your photos to your files? from your
camera?
I ONLY use the Built in Win Explores/My Computer folders C: with the 'FOLDER
VIEW' I created or were there to transfer my
photos. I don't use other photo programs that came with cameras. I then
use a great photo imagining program that is free.

copy and paste your pics into your 'Picture folder'
then any new downloads should go into that folder or your subfolders.
I keep mine Chronologically. by date.
