Photo Gallery rotate changes EXIF 'acquisition date'

Hi

Has anyone else noticed that using Photo Gallery to rotate an image that was
captured days/weeks/months before changes the EXIF 'Acquisition Date' to the
date on which you perform the rotate operation?

This really messes up the date sorting/grouping after you perform any rotate
operations on old images. I've got a whole bunch that I took a couple of
years ago now showing up as having been acquired 'today'!

Good thing I have a backup of my images ;-)

Cheers

Assuming you can order by filename:

Add the date to the filenames. If you prefix with
the date you can always see them in order, no matter
what happens later:

Re: Photo Gallery rotate changes EXIF 'acquisition date'

Thanks for the suggestion, although I'm not going to implement it.

I've filed a bug report on this, was just wondering whether anyone else can
confirm this bug and will also hopefully file a bug to make sure that
Microsoft notices.

Cheers

How about

attrib +R *.jpg /s

I don't think this would be called a bug --
more like "by design", at least at this stage
and for that type of problem.

Re: Photo Gallery rotate changes EXIF 'acquisition date'

If I make all my images read-only how am I going to add tags etc.

Not sure how this could be "by design", if I took the digital image 2 years
ago and then rotate it today it doesn't make any sense to set the EXIF
"Acquisition Date" to today. So now I have a handful of say birthday party
photos that don't group together with the other 2 year old birthday party
photos acquired at the same time.

And I'm not talking about the filesystem's last modified date, I'm talking
about the embedded EXIF "Acquisition Date" field, i.e. the date the image
was acquired by the digital camera.

Cheers

Re: Photo Gallery rotate changes EXIF 'acquisition date'

"By design", or "Postponed", anything but what
you expect, is sort of like "the check's in the
mail". Well, considering this probably won't
get fixed (unless a lot of people complain real
soon), what I would do is write a little program
that stored all the info I wanted preserved to a
database (flat file, whatever) and restore the
jpeg files' info at the press of a button.

Yes, I know.

Re: Photo Gallery rotate changes EXIF 'acquisition date'

I guess I'm not as pessimistic as you ;-)

Anyway can you confirm you see this same problem?

And the reason I'm posting here is to confirm whether other users are seeing
the same problem, or if it's a specific issue on my machine. And if others
are then to encourage them to also file a bug report.

Cheers

Re: Photo Gallery rotate changes EXIF 'acquisition date'

Hi, thanks for the speedy response. I'm looking forward to using the new
tagging facilities with integrated search etc. for my digital image library
of thousands of images, and this bug would be a deal breaker.

When you say look out for an update are you talking along the lines of a
Windows Update update to fix this for beta2 users or are you talking more
about it being fixed in the RC1 release?

Cheers

Re: Photo Gallery rotate changes EXIF 'acquisition date'

Sorry for being unclear. Look for an update post/email from me (or another
MS employee on the team) on the issue. We have repro'd the issue on beta 2
and current builds and we are confirming why the issue exists and what we can
possibly do about it.

Thanks again for reporting this
