pictures look wrong in Photo Gallery

When viewing pictures in Photo Gallery, all the photos look oddly washed out,
almost sepia-toned. If you view them in slideshow, they look fine. The
photo background is a cream color, and it almost looks like that is also
distorting the pic color. I can't find an option to change it anywhere.
    Help?

I'm having your problem too! I think that it's the video card. I have a
GeForce 7900 GT with the latest drivers installed. Everything works fine
(games included): only the Photo Gallery has this problem... Please, someone
    help us!

    The "solution" is Google Picasa?

You may have to go to the second page of posts to see the solution. Click
More or whatever it is at the bottom.

The following is quoted from the solution provided by Redbeaver:

First off, there r 2 solutions i discovered...one is if u have Photoshop
installed, the other if you don't.

If you do have, in Control Panel, there's an Adobe Gamma tool. Run it by
step-by-step wizard (or by Control Panel if u know what u'r doing) and
    create
ur own Profile. Name it anything, i name mine Vista-1 just so its easier to
see. It will create an ICM profile immediately installed in Window's
system32-spool-color folder (given u dont change the saving location. better
    yet, dont even try.). Done?
Back in Vista's control panel, open the Colour Management tool. In there
u'll see the default ICC profile, mine named Samsung - Natural Color Pro 1.0
ICM, file name SM205BW.icm since my monitor is a Samsung 205BW. Click on
Add.., and if you scroll down, u'll see ur profile; again, mine said
    Vista-1.
U might need to click on Browse.. if u dont see yours becoz u saved it
    somewhere else...
[Now, this part i'm not sure whether u need to do it, but i did it
anyway.... Click on the Profiles button on the right bottom corner and click
on Combine My Settings with System Defaults. then...]
Click OK, and click on Vista-1 and click on Set as Default Profile. Click
    Close.

Now try opening a picture in WPG

Ooops, almost forgot, for people who doesnt have Photoshop, u can google any
free ICC profile or go to:
    http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/adobergb.html
Download these free ICC, and install some..or..well... i tried installing
all of them anyway... Just extract them, then right click and select
    Install...

Now go to Vista Control Panel, open Color Management, and click on Add...
Scroll down and all of the installed ICC should be there. Pick one and set
    it
default. [Again, u could click on Profiles and select Combine My Profile...
but im not sure about this.] Click Close and you're good to go.

Of course if it still shows the wrong colour just pick a different ICC and
try it. First ICC i tried is the Adobe1998 one and it seems to be working
fine... Of course im no expert and if any of u experts sees the better ICC
    in
there (there r like 10~15 of them in the ZIP), by all means correct me.

    THat's all.

    Hope that helps

I can't get WVPG to even see my pictures. Its empty and I have pictures in
    my pictures folder.
Seems like some kind of access issues. Any ideas?

This worked. Thanks very much. It sucks that ms didn't address this before
    sending out Vista.

I dispute that this is a solution: I've taken great care in ensuring my
monitor displays the right colours; Windows Photo Gallery just doesn't render
    images correctly!

Here's a screen grab of the exact same jpg file opened in Internet Explorer
and Windows Photo Gallery. (NB. every other application I've tried renders
the image correctly in the same way as IE here.)

    http://www.timjeanes.com/pics/BadWin...otoGallery.jpg

Why is it that Windows Photo Gallery (the application I'd use to view all my
photos) can't render jpegs?! I'd already deleted some of my recent holiday
photos because (from viewing them in WPG) I thought they'd come out far too
dark. From what I'm seeing here they were probably fine. Grrrr!

Strage problem. I can't duplicate what you're seeing. For me, Photo
Gallery presents images faithfully...more or less.

    Hmm...

Consider the following. I use Photoshop which as most know is the long
running king of photo enhancement software bar none. So just for the
heck of it I picked 10 raw never altered images at random, then
compared how they appear in Photoshop compared to Photo Gallery.

Interesting results. For those thare aren't familiar with Photoshop it
is a professional grade application and has many settings you can
tweak, some very precisely. One such setting is color management.

If you enable it, Photoshop will present you will multiple choices as
to how it should show the image BEFORE you work on it. As a "raw"
image with absolutely no color management applied, or using one of
several presets (like Adobe's RGB 1998) or to match a printer's
profile to more closely match a device's color space. To be fair, I
applied no color management expecting that Photoshop under that
setting would produce a mirror image of what Photo Gallery did.
    However that isn't what happened!

I opened each image in Photo Gallery, shrunk that window down to allow
it to be along the Photoshop window. Results were interesting. With no
color management applied you would think the images would be
identical. They aren't. The difference is slight. Very slight. I would
estimate maybe a couple of shades different, if you would vary a image
in a tiny 100 steps, each just tweaking the hue slightly. Each image
in Photo Gallery has a verly slight bias towards blue or just a tad
cooler then the same image appears untouched in Photoshop. I could
detect no different in overall brightness or contrast.

The question is why? I have no idea. Curious of others having
    Photoshop get similar results.
