Vista - Media Player audio playback issue

I have a similar issue, WMP playback grinds to a halt after a few minutes,
but I don't have a Dell or a Sigmatel, I'm running a Creative sound card. I
do suspect this is a driver issue, in fact Creative are still working on new
drivers and have posted a messgae about their issues:

I'm going to try the beta drivers for my Creative.

You can fix this problem as follows. Thanks to jazacoop.

1. go to control panel,sound,speakers/headphones.
2. Under "Enhancements", select "Disable all enhancements"
3. click apply and ok

You have now fixed the "hiccup" problem.

That doesnt solve the problem for me. Winamp plays my music fine with all the
enhancements on as well.

THANK YOU and Jazacoop. Finally, my new XPS 410 Media Player 11 works!!!
Can't tell the difference with enhancements disabled and can finally hear
music without it skipping at the very end of Every song I played. MS tech
support sucks and was of no help. Once again, thank you dpbailey

I have the same issue, and iTunes plays the very same mp3 files with out a
single glitch. It's driving me nuts. Have you come across an answer?

Either you should get the driver update from Dell/Sigmatel, or you should
turn off Enhancements on your audio card.

Either way, talking with Dell or Sigmatel would be your best/quickest route
forward. =\
