| | gif support in photo gallery I really like the new photo gallery in vista (i own ultimate). But it seems that it can not display GIF Images. YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING! :-( This is really a bad implementation. There is not even any patent on it any more. I was pretty happy to see that this time I might not have to install a 3rd party picture viewer as the windows before but it seems tha again Microsoft didn't do the job right! ![]() So, is my irritation legitimate? Or do I miss a certain update or a workaround? Just to say, using IE or another program is not the right choice. I was looking forward to have ONE Programm which is managing all important Image formats and GIF is certainly important (at least for all webdesigners like me). Thank you all for your answers and Microsoft for the nice OS (which you could make even better and satisfying if you would eliminate such annoyances!) Sascha |

| | Re: gif support in photo gallery Yeah, GIFs are goners. They'll be goners on the Web eventually too in favor of PNG which supports transparency without the 256 color limit. But, PNG doesn't support animations. And so far there's no consensus among Web developers as to which format will work best for those (except for the fact that just about everyone uses Flash already). They really never should have been in photo gallery. If Microsoft had created something called "Image Gallery" instead, then GIFs would have been appropriate to include. GIFs will be around the web for a very very long time to come. > > But, PNG doesn't support animations. There are a lot of things PNG is good for. There are a lot of things PNG is not good for. Often times, depending on the nature of the screenshot, GIF results in significantly smaller file sizes. PNG, when appropriate, often results in higher quality images. There is room and need for both. Dale |
