Windows media Player 11 not showing Videos.

I have windows media player 11 on this pc which is brand new. When I import
video clips from my dig cam (they are .avi) they are black. I can hear the
sound but all I see is black. How do i fix this? I read in another post about
codecs? I have no clue what that is or how to reinstall it as vista as well
as the player came pre installed. Can someone pleeze help me out! Thanx in
    advance.

Codecs are necessary to encode/decode audio- and video-material for video
files. The problem with avi files is that the original video streams are
stored uncompressed. Many vendors are using video codecs to compress the
video material. In many cases this is the divx codec - that can be
downloaded in a free version at www.divx.com. If your dig cam needs another
codec, you should take that information from the cam manual (or from the
    cameras vendor website).

    Hope that helps
