Vista Ultimate Media Center burned DVD plays upside down and backwards

I just burned a DVD from within Vista Ultimate's Media Center. When I played
the DVD in VLC on my XP desktop and DVD Player on my Mac the video is upside
down and backwards. The menu screen is correct, it's just the actual video.
This is a stock install of Ultimate with only the drivers for my tuner card
and windows updates installed on it.
What is causing it to do this and what can I do to burn watchable DVDs?

Ok, Do you have Divx installed on your system. Windows DVD Maker kept
crashing when I was importing .avi files. The Vista helper said that Divx
was the problem and I needed to upgrade my Divx. I did and WDM did not crash
anymore, but the videos were now upside down.

Sucks and how. I recently went into an online chat with Support listed 20
faults and told them I would return the product. They became frantic, I even
received two phone calls. If I get a refund I may buy a Mac.

What precise version of DivX are you using now?

If you preconvert them to WMV using Windows Movie Maker, do they then work
correctly?

AVI can be rather a headache due to all sorts of fun codec issues. There's
800+ codecs already out there.... =\
