On Vista Startup: Problem with ffdshow codec

After starting Vista I received the message, "Problem caused by ffdshow
codec".

The message suggested that I visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/
where I could join a forum discussion about the problem, but upon visiting I
did not see such a discussion.

That said, I'm not really sure what the problem is, but now that it's been
identified I would like to do something about it. - Can someone point me
toward the next step?

Thanks...

Wow, first I heard of Vista actually saying it didn't like a codec.
Yep the ffdshow codec package is generally considered BAD.

If you have it on your system, my advice, GET RID OF IT. It can mess
up all kinds of things. Look in Control Panel, Programs and Features,
then scan the list and look for it. Best to uninstall. However doing
so may cause some file types to no longer be playable.

Welcome to one of the catch 22's of videos under Windows. Generally
the problem with installing any so-called codec pack (Vista codec pack
is another BAD one) is they install all kinds of garbage besides the
one or two codecs you may actually benefit from. This often leads to
all kinds of odd reactions, since Windows has a long checkered history
of trying to figure out which codec to use and how to access it and
often falls flat on it's face in the trying if there are too many
codecs on your system. This is very complex issues since only some
systems seem effected. Some people have managed to install all kinds
of codecs and seemingly have no issues. Others only install one or two
problematic codecs and their system goes nuts.

Re: On Vista Startup: Problem with ffdshow codec

It must be the codec saying it as MS wouldn't give a link like that.

Re: On Vista Startup: Problem with ffdshow codec

What version of ffdshow.ax is on your system? Are you using the latest
stable version from them?

Re: On Vista Startup: Problem with ffdshow codec

Thanks very much for the help. Following "Control Panel, Programs and
Features,, YaddaYadda" I was unable to find an instance of FFDSHOW installed.
In fact, the only codec listed there was DivX. - Because I rarely use
DivX, I removed the codex and the program.

While poking around I also removed something called AviSynth 2.5. Like
FFDSHOW, I'm not sure what that is or how it got there. My PC is new and I
think I may have been a little overzelous setting it up.

Using a proggie called VideoInspector I pulled up a list of the codecs
installed on my system. A screencap of that is here:

BTW, I've rebooted several times since posting earlier today, and I no
longer get the error message.

Thanks!

Re: On Vista Startup: Problem with ffdshow codec

Well, you know the vendor at that point -- a link to a direct download or
update might not be topical in six months, especially if it's code
undergoing high churn still.

So a generic "go here for vendor" response probably could be better targeted
but should be a helpful path forward. =\
