wmm rejects to import mpg videos at a sudden

I didn't create anything explicitly - I guess, even that was caused by
settings in the pre-installed Vista on my new notebook.
I received it as a birthday present from my children (formerly I used NT and
W2K, but mainly OS/2), and I'm not yet familiar with this new MS system.

Yes, there is a recovery DVD for Vista (provided by DELL, with a DELL logo
    on it.)

Perhaps I'll try that, after having asked our windows network admin in my
office. He might know what do to, as he's a certified MSE.

System Restore is a very valuable tool. It has failed sometimes
but it has also saved me many hours of work.
You have tried System Restore? ANY restore points available?
When you use Windows Update, restore points are automatically
    made.

    Good luck.

According to WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information, what MPEG/MPEG2
codecs does it say you have installed?

    Hi,
sorry to say, but I have no idea at all, which codecs are installed or how
to find out or how to re-install them. I know that they're important, but
    that's all.
Media player works fine without any error messages, it's just a problem to
import those files into movie maker, even those which came along with movie
maker as demo files. So I assume it can't be the files, but it must be some
    irritation in movie maker.

BTW: thanks to all for your replies and your assistance.

Go to Windows Media Player and open up the Help menu, click About, click
Technical Support Information . It will list out your installed MPEG and
MPEG2 decoders in a neat list. That's really valuable information and that
list is also consumed by Movie Maker. So-- there really is potential value
in answering this question, and it shouldn't be too difficult. Making sense
of that list may be, but that's why people like myself are here. =)

The problem you are going to have now, is if you re-install Vista, you
probably can't re-install all the other software which came on your machine,
as instead of giving you a dvd with it all on they preload it into this
partition. I'm surprised you have a vista cd, are you sure it isn't just a
repair cd which will take you to the partiton you have deleted all the files
    from..

In the mean time, answer Zach's question below.

    Hi,
once again I have to apologize - I don't find any help menu in WMM in Vista !!
    (
There is no question mark or something similar in the menu title bar - just
different possibilities to handle media files in various manners.
Seems as if I were a bit too stupid to understand..........
