WMP in Vista - Version Error?

WMP in Vista - Version Error?

When I attempt to open Windows Media Player, I receive the following Error:

The file wmp.dll has a version number of 26794.47964.26794.46305 where
    11.0.6000.6324 was expected.

Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled.
Do you want to install the Player from the Microsoft Web Site? YES/NO

When you select YES, it downloads a version from 1/15/2007.

Then when you try to install. It says this version is older than the current
    version.

WMP has not worked since the VISTA install.

Any suggestions or help on what to do?

That wouldn't work. What versions of wmp.dll are your system where? What
did you install to your system before this broke?

This is easy to fix up once I have that data.

Re: WMP in Vista - Version Error?

Right now your system appears to never had a working install, if that's the
case. The Vista version is 11.0.6000.6324. Is there any version of that
    file in c:\windows\dllcache ?

Was WMP working previous to the upgrade... ?

Given what you've said so far, you would want to run a System File
Protection scan, which I believe is runnable via running:
    sfc /scannow
That may prompt you for your Vista CD, as you would need to restore the real
Vista version of wmp.dll from somewhere.

Ran Scf/scannow. Completed and window closed. Never prompted.
Do not find that Vista WMP Version

Yes, WMP was working fine before upgrade.

    Any further suggestions to try?

Well, you need the Vista version of wmp.dll, which doesn't appear to be on
    your system.

If you could copy wmp.dll wmp.dll.txt , that would be great. I would like
to get ahold of that - if you could that up on MegaUpload or RapidShare or
something like that, I would appreciate that. I would like to know the
properties of this corrupt file to determine if somebody needs to fix their
    software.

    Does installing this::
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931621/en-us
fix you up? That should reset wmp.dll to something non-random.

Re: WMP in Vista - Version Error?

A: That's the question right now. You have a random file that stomped on
WMP's file. That package was my second guess (behind SFC) as to how to get
the right file put back in place.

B: If you just make a copy of this strange wmp.dll and rename that copy to
wmp.dll.txt, I would be very interested in that file.

It may be possible to either:
    * delete this bogus wmp.dll and use that that KB I pointed you to
    or
    * reinstall Vista
in order to fix whoever stomped on this Windows file.
