Vista - Problems with Playing Storyboard

I recently got a new PC in March and it's running the Windows Vista Home
Premium, 32 bit version. I have imported my video clips into the Windows
Movie Maker and have been adding transitions and effects. The problem is when
I click on a frame and press the play icon in the preview pane. Nothing
happens. It won't play a preview so I can tell if I like what I've done.
I've also had issues of it freezing up on me. The whole screen will go
faded, and then when I go to the Task Manager, it says the program isn't
responding and I have to close it down. Is there a fix for this problem?
I am trying to make a video of my son from his birth till now and this is
getting really frustrating.

I am so glad I am not the only one with this problem, when adding clips the
preview is fine, if i add two transitions its fine but on the third
transition, it shuts down my new laptop no error message or anything, all i
see when it reboots itself that i have recovered from a fatal error and how
do i want to restart??? When i go to reopen the file it will not play the
storyboard.!! this is so frustrating. I am not at all computer savy, so
please respond in laymans english if you have a help for me/us.

I also share the problem in Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit version, when
adding transitions to Windows Movie Maker 6.0. Basically, I can add a number
of transitions to a project and all works well until I get to around say
eight or nine transitions and then on adding one more, the preview will not
work. I notice that deleting a few transitions will recover the preview, but
after saving the project I may need to delete even more transitions to again
recover the preview. My research would suggest that it is a common problem,
for which I have yet to find a solution. I think it is a problem with this
Microsoft package as do a number of other people. However, I have come across
the suggestion that it may be a video card problem. I also have a new
computer, mine is a Toshiba A100-338 laptop. What computers are you using?

People, people, people. WHY do you torture yourselves using Microsoft
crap for video editing? I'm just wondering.

Look at all the recurring issues people keep reporting:

1. video don't play
2. audio don't play
3. if you add a certain codec, DVD Maker, Movie Maker chokes
4. audio is distorted
5. playback is choppy
6. transations don't work, can only add so many
7. can't edit
8. can't drop videos to timeline
9. common file types not supported
10. Playback stutters, stalls, stops, hangs

On and on.

NONE of these things happer with REAL video editing software. No it
isn't your video card.

I was wondering if you have a solution to this??? I am having exactly the
same problem and it is very frustrating. Is there someone in Vista we can
actually phone and contact???

As I been trying to tell you people, Microsoft's Movie Maker, is
basically a toy. If all you want it to do is make a 30 second "video"
or something a little larger comprised of a few clips or a handful of
pictures, maybe it will work sometime. Otherwise for all you wannabe
future Steven Spielbergs, do youself a HUGE favor and invest in some
decent video editing software and guess what... all these stupid,
senseless time wasting problems go away!

My guess a BIG part of a lot of problem I see in this newsgroup is
CODEC related. As you already know Media Player does a piss ass poor
job with codecs and so does Movie Maker. To make a "movie" something
called transcoding is involved. It is just a fancy name for
uncompressing and then recompressing source files from one file type
to another so they are made "ready" for use in a finished video. For
better video editing software this is child's play. What they are
designed to do. All the time, no faults, no flubs, no errors. Isn't
that how it is suppose to be?

A good video editor won't blink no matter what type of source files
you throw at it. I can take literally HUNDREDS of sources files of
every type from AVI to MPG to DiX to MOV or Real Media and mix in
JPEG, TIFF, GIF, whatever, all at different color depth, different
frame rates, differnet frame sizes and simply move them around on the
timeline at will or edit them anyway I see fit, add effects you can't
even dream of doing in Movie Maker and then when done simply press a
single button and sit back and wait while a perfectly made video is
produced time after time, meaning I've done this HUNDREDS of times,
more like over a thousands times. Why do so many instead prefer to
torture themselves fighting with a toy? Beats me.

I am having the same problem in the same scenario except that preview played
fine B4 adding the transitions, which I did in 2 phases. 2 or three frames I
added "effects" to when adding them to the storyboard, saved and preview
played. Then after adding all of the frames to the board I was going to add
for the day I added transitions to most of the frames, saved and preview
works fine. Added a few more saved and fine. Added an opening transition to
the first frame and the preview wouldn't play. Saved, won't play. Removed
opening transition, no play. Closed re-opened program, won't play.
Re-started computer, Still won't play. Published to my computer and still
won't play, either in moviemaker or Media center.
Hoping for a resolution message soon.

adding transitions.
So what video editing software do you use?
