    Windows Movie Maker Crashes

    Hi,

I have a problem with Windows Movie Maker. It will import media fine but as
soon as I try to drag anything into the timeline (video or photo), the
application crashes and I get the message "Windows Movie Maker has stopped
    working".

I found some discussion on the net about Nero causing a problem but I do not
have this installed. I am using the 32 bit version of Vista Ultimate Edition.

    Have you got roxio installed?
Has it always been a problem, or has it worked at some point?
If it worked before, what changes to the syustem have you made?
If it's never worked, what file types are you using?

No, I don't have Roxio installed. I've never tried to use Movie Maker before
so it has never worked for me but I do have a lot of software installed.

As far as 'video' software is concerned (if this is what could be causing a
problem), I have divx, Quicktime and Real installed. I also have the QT and
real alternative codecs installed and I suppose you could possibly call Flash
8 a video application. Are you aware if any of these could be a problem?

I've tried to use Movie maker with jpeg files to create a photo slideshow. I
know the Vista beta used to work with dvr-ms files from my media centre so I
tried editing one of those and found exactly the same thing - the application
crashes as soon as you try to add anything to the timeline.

When it crashed it wrote an event in the event logs. Look in the Event
Viewer in the System and the Application logs and post the details from the
    error.

    Re: Windows Movie Maker Crashes

Okay it appears that I've just answered my own question by clicking on the
link in the log and found that the problem was with the Morgan stream
switcher. I've just uninstalled it and movie maker now works.

I wouldn't have looked there and seen the link though if it wasn't for the
post here so it was still you that solved the problem (I didn't answer my own
    question really !!). Many Thanks.

That isn't "video editing" software, which is what you need and
depending on what package you buy if you plan on making DVDs you
likely will need DVD authoring software as well. They are often sold
    separately.

You generally only need DVD Authoring software if you want chapters, a
sub menu system, and other commercial grade features.

The first thing any Microsoft fanboy will try to do is blame some
third party application every time Movie Maker or DVD Makers crashes
or refuses to do what it is suppose to. That's their default answer to
every problem Movie Maker and DVD Maker causes or falls victim to
since both are so poorly written. It seems to be a reflex action of
fanboys, point your finger outward, never inward. As you obviously
know Vista is perfect and totally bug free and every crash is somebody
else's fault, never Microsoft's fault, never, never, never. <snicker>

You're welcome. The error reporting system and logs in Vista are a huge
improvement over previous versions of Windows.
