Vista - when playing video - picture but no sound

I have a Windows media player 11, on Windows Vista Home Premium. When I play
a video file, the picture runs but I cannot hear any sound even though all
volumes are at their max and the speakers turned on. When I play a DVD, the
sound is fine but this always happens when I play a video file.

Do you have FFDShow or AC3Filter installed? This sounds like one of those
is installed and has decided to badly take over audio decoding...

If you could explain to me what those are, I would be very much gratified. As
you can see, I don't know anything about computers.
