| | Re: Can't view old photos in Windows Vista Photo Gallery I'm no longer frustrated. I returned the Vista system and bought a Macbook Pro. No problems at all with this new system. Thanks to everyone for their help. "Dion Brown" wrote: > If the drive is formatted at NTFS you will need to take ownership of the > files on the new machine. | | Re: Can't view old photos in Windows Vista Photo Gallery Dave, You seem to have some knowledge in this area. I have the same problem as "Frustrated Chris" appeared to have. I am running Vista. Windows Media Center won't let me see any of my jpg files. Many of the jpgs came from my Windows ME PC, but some are more recent and have come direct from my camera to Vista \Pictures - and these show the same symptoms. I have tried to Associate jpg files with various applications (ehshell, media center, phot gallery, etc) to no avail. Can you help? To answer some of your questions: > Or where you copied them? I placed them in \Pictures. Windows Media Center shows me the various sub-folders but they appear to be empty ("No pictures were found") other than non-jpg images. > Did you import them with Windows Photo Gallery? They were copied (not > moved) across through a USB cable (we used to call it lap-link). > Can you get to them with Windows Explorer? Yes, and with Irfanview. I guess what I'd like to do is use Vista / Windows Media Center for what it was designed for. Hoping you can help.... | | Re: Can't view old photos in Windows Vista Photo Gallery Marco, I'm not an expert, by any means. I just like to troubleshoot problems. And I only use MC to watch tv. My MC is only set to open .dvr files. WPG is set as the default for .jpg files Both open my .jpg files just fine. You mean you copied the files to C:\Pictures? Did you create this folder? Do you "own" it? It could be a ownership or permissions problem. Vista expects users to put photos under their login folder, C:\Users\youraccount\Pictures You might try copying a few photos to that folder, and see if MC can see them. Don't try to copy them to the "My Pictures" folder, if it's there. It's not a real folder. You don't want to get messed up with the virtual folders. I also saw in another group where someone renamed the .jpg files to .jpeg and MC was able to view them. Maybe your .jpg file format doesn't match what MC expects. If you open one in Irfanview, and Hit "I", what does it say the Compression is? If you can't see the photos in WPG, your thumbnail database may be corrupted. It is located at C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery\Pictures.pd4 You can try renaming it to Pictures.pd4.old, and see if that helps. | | Re: Can't view old photos in Windows Vista Photo Gallery Dave, Thanks for your tips. Feedback as follows: Yes, my jpg files are in C:\Users\youraccount\Pictures Irfanview compression on a jpg shows as jpeg Thanks to you I've now discovered WPG - and that sees jpg files just fine. I renamed a jpg to jpeg and MC can now see it. There is no file in my account called pictures.pd4 - maybe I have a different version of Vista. I'll use WPG from here on in for stills. | | Re: Can't view old photos in Windows Vista Photo Gallery Marco, It looks like you just have to rename your files... so you probably don't need to reset your thumbnail databases... but if you ever do.... The \Users\youraccount\AppData folder is hidden, so you can't set it until you change your settings to show hidden files. To show hidden files, open Windows Explorer, click on "Organize", select "Folder & Search Options", Select "View", check "Show hidden files and folders", OK Media Center stores thumbnail images in C:\Users\youraccount\AppData\Local\Microsoft\ehome\Image.db Close MC, rename it to Image.db.old and MC will rebuild it the next time you start. Another way to reset thumbnails is to run Disk Cleanup on your C: Open Computer right-click on C: select Properties click Disk Cleanup make sure there's a check mark for Thumbnails. ok Good Luck! | | Re: Can't view old photos in Windows Vista Photo Gallery This is a good thread, but I'm having a very similar issue. XP HD crashed this week, so went an bought a Vista system (HP). I had all digital files (from 3-4 different cameras) stored on an external WD MyBook drive. When I open the files now, about 1/3 of them are corrupt. They all open, but sometimes only 20% of the file is there and the rest is jumbled and scrambled up like when digital cable is on the brink. I have tried plugging the external drive into other XP systems and the same problem exists. New files I download off of 2 cameras now come in 100% with this issue. The files all look fine on the camera LCD, but when downloaded to the vista system they are jumbled up. Also tried at least 4 different viewers - IRfanview, Xnview, and 2 that came with Vista. I've narrowed this down to a Vista issue - not related to camera, SD cards, external drive, etc. PLEASE HELP! Thank you. | | Re: Can't view old photos in Windows Vista Photo Gallery mmm not trying to bother but... most sure the jpgs were corrupted when copied to the drive, its almost sure that you wont corrupt a file for accessing it unless you make modifications to the file, when in fact you write to the file again, so, xp may be the real culprit (as it happened to me) before you go all out bashing me for my statement, i think the importing issue is just a different one, sadly, theres no way to recover the corrupted pictures, so i suggest try to live with it and focus on the next, now then... how are you trying to import? do you use the import tool within vista or do you copy the files manually? where are you trying to copy them? did you try to import the files in any other place/drive/partition? did you try to import the files in other pc as well? |

| | Same Problem Here - All photos from XP can't be seen onVista I also have hundreds of jpeg files from my Canon cameras that I have on an external hard drive that was originally used on an XP system. My XP system / harddrive crashed and I ended up getting a new system with Vista. Now all of the pictures from the external hard drive can not be viewed in Vista (Windows Photo Gallery). I get the following error "Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. This file format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery." I've tried copying files to my local hard drive, Vista still can't see them. I changed "ownership" of the folder, but that didn't work either ... then I got permission errors. I've found several posts of similar issues, but NO fixes. Although I like a lot of the Vista upgrades, the Photo Gallery is a major miss. That would seem to be a logic next step. The symptoms are too vague to really offer any help. 1. Is this external drive running on the FAT32 file system or NTFS? 2. What file types are getting messed up? .jpg or something else? 3. If you don't see images in Photo Gallery WHAT if anything are you seeing? 4. Have you tried installing another free graphic viewer like Xnview? |

| | More info OK ... the problem is worse than I thought, but hopefully the additional detail can get me to a solution. I hooked up my external hard drive back to the clean XP machine, still can't access the jpeg files. Most other files work (including video clips), but not jpeg. I get the error "No preview available" in Picture and Fax viewer. I then hooked it up to a Windows 2000 machine. No luck either. This time the error is "Can't open this type". I also tried copying to a local hard drive ... "Can't copy file, source file may be in use" I think it's some kind of permission / security settings, but I can't seem to take ownership of the individual files "access is denied". When I go into the security settings it said I can only view the settings. I have over 6000 photos that I don't want to lose!
