Vista - Playing DVD

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium pre installed on my new computer. I
am supposed to be able to view dvd's, but I haven't been able to. I have all
the hardware I need and I checked that all are up to date. Now I get a
message saying to use a lower screen resolution. Can someone please tell me
what screen resolution I need to play DVD's?? I've tried a bunch of different
ones, but nothing seems to work. I't driving me crazy!!!!

It shouldn't matter. I'm using 1920x1200 resolution and every third
party DVD player I have plays DVDs fine. What application is giving
you the error message, what EXACTLY is the message and what resolution
are you running at?

You could for testing try dropping your resolution to 640x480 which is
the default DVD frame size for NTSC specs then work your way higher.

"DVD may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the video resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of the DVD." I was led to believe I could play dvd's using what was preinstalled with windows home premium and not have to do anything else or install anything else.

I'm using the business version that doesn't come with have media
center so I can't duplicate what you see. From the error message it
sounds like something besides media center is trying to open and play
the DVD at the same time. From what I understand you need to set up
media center. Perhaps someone that has it can walk you through the
steps.
