| | Why can I not crop my photos with Vista????? Since getting my new HP with Vista I can no longer crop my photos to my desired size. I had an old E-machines with just 40gig hard drive, now I have over 500. I already upgraded my software to vista compatible but nothing works. Example when I try to crop an image from 54"x36" to a 4"x6" it comes out at about 40"x29". The software companies tell me to resize my original image down then it should work, but does not. Someone please help me, I am a race track photographer and I really need to be able to crop my photos -- Scottynitro |

Anyway...I hope the following info makes sense..... If you wish to physically resize an image... cropping is not the answer. To actually resize the file much smaller...you must change the pixel dimensions. To use your example: the pixel dimensions of a 54"x36" image could be 2600x3900. If you crop it to 4"x6"...you could still have an image that was 2600x3900 because the aspect ratio is the same. If you cropped just a portion of the image...the pixel size would depend on the size of the crop but would still be much larger than the result you are seeking. For example if the full size image was a chest up portrait and you cropped just the face it could still be as large as 1600x2400. So...if you are looking for a small size that would load fast on the net...you might try resizing to 600x400...or maybe 900x600. There was a PowerToy image resizer for WinXP but currently there is not one for Vista. The freeware IrfanView would be a useful substitute for resizing the images. Download IrfanView http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967 (get the plug-ins too) http://www.tucows.com/preview/415586 Here are some instructions: In Irfanview...go to...File / Batch Conversion... Browse to the correct folder and select the images you wish to resize... Click the "Add" button. If you wish to resize all the images in the folder... just click the "Add All" button. Now...with "Batch Conversion" ticked... Check...Use Advanced Options and click the "Set Advanced Options" button... Place a check in the "Resize" field. Enter the new size. If...for example...you want 640 by 480...enter the largest number in Both fields and be sure that "Preserve Aspect Ratio" is checked. This way the correct number will be applied to the longest dimension and your aspect ratio will be preserved.. Click...OK... Choose an "Output Format". Choose a folder to save the new files in... Click the "Start" button. -- John Inzer MS Picture It! - Digital Image MVP Digital Image Highlights and FAQs http://tinyurl.com/aczzp Notice This is not tech support I am a volunteer Solutions that work for me may not work for you Proceed at your own risk |

| | Re: Why can I not crop my photos with Vista????? -- John Thanks for the tips, but when I said cropping my photos I meant for printing, not for storage. Storage is not a problem. When I crop my picures I crop them to achieve the optimal picture for the people I sell to. Some of them want other cars in the picture others do not. As I stated with my old computer there was never a problem, but now with vista the size will not crop correctly.
