HDMI Input to Vista Ultimate PC

Hello All,
I have a satellite DVR that I have to replace to get HDTV. I want to record
the movies off the DVR onto my PC using the HDMI input. I have tried a range
of programs/settings etc. to no avail. I have tried HP help but they will
only do this for $100/hr and no guarentees for success. Does anyone know how
to do this?

Re: HDMI Input to Vista Ultimate PC

There is no video capture card that I am aware of that will accept HDMI
inputs since decoded HD programs require very large bandwith which your PC
and it disk drive can not easily handle.

Re: HDMI Input to Vista Ultimate PC

Unfortunately, that appears to be the emerging picture. I have gotten four
answers from HP: 2x you can do that but we can't tell you how, 1x you can do
that and we can tell you how at $70/45 min, and 1x you can't do that. I have
the NVDIA 8600 graphics board in my pavillion computer with an HDMI port. I
made the apparently incorrect assumption that if you can output on that port
you can also input. Perhaps you can't. I would be happy with capture and do
not necessarily need to edit. I have tried a number of approaches and none
work.

Re: HDMI Input to Vista Ultimate PC

No graphics cards that I am aware of also support input on the ports that
they are designed to output on.
That is is like saying can my PC based stereo speaker system also record
what it hears in a room instead of only outputting sound.

Re: HDMI Input to Vista Ultimate PC

TWS that port is likely designed to allow connection to an HDMI display.
Since it is an output rather than an input, it will not allow video capture.
You will need an HD capture device and loads of resources to do that.

Re: HDMI Input to Vista Ultimate PC

A new and very Interesting product that I was not aware of too bad it does
not appear to have the ability to look like a HD tuner card so that it can
input directly to Media Center.

Re: HDMI Input to Vista Ultimate PC

Yeah, this sounds like an inevitable evolution in the technology, especially
if you are going to use the computer as a media center. Unfortunately,
laptops have the graphics cards they are assembled with which can not be
replaced. Also, none of the software available will look for input there.
