using Live File System to backup photos

I used a DVD-R and used the Live File System to backup my photos. Since the
DVD can hold so many photos, I still have so much space left on the disc.
Only thing is, I have 1 disc drive and need the drive to use another CD. If I
close the session on the DVD, can I still add pictures to it later? The last
time I ejected the DVD I couldn't put more files in there and it wasn't
reading the files and I had to reformat it again. Is there anyway I can reuse
the DVD without having to leave it there until it gets full?
