| | Assign playback to WMP How do I assign default playback of certain file types to the 64-bit wmplayer.exe? (Note that I still need the 32-bit WMP to open other file types by default.) And why is it that in Vista x64 the 64-bit player is not the default one? |

| | Re: Assign playback to WMP What file types do you want to assign? Assigning *some* to that is difficult, swapping them all over is easier. The 64bit player isn't the default because third parties don't really fully support 64bit yet. Same as with Internet Explorer. That'd be rude to leave everyone else in the dust at this juncture. =) If you're a poweruser, look up my previous references (many people have referenced this externally) to /SwapTo:64 . (Don't forget the Path fix.) With that in hand, you could track the registry changes and revert back what you want to WMP-32. But a mixed environment probably won't really work properly. If you tell me you work with disabled or autistic children I'll probably be willing to figure out how to mostly get it to work best, but it'd be a rather a headache, frankly, and you probably want me spending my time doing more interesting things anyways. =) -- Speaking for myself only. It would not have been a hassle in WinXP, where you can just assign filetypes manually to programs of your choice. Anyway, Iguess I'll just switch everything to the 64 bit player for now. How do I do that? I take it, this has been deteiled somewhere on your webpage, right? I'l look it up right away... Thanks. | | Re: Assign playback to WMP It wouldn't have been possible in Windows XP, since there's never previously been a 64-bit native version of the player shipping alongside a 32-bit version of the player. =) If you want to use the 64bit version of WMP as the default player on Vista 64-bit, run "unregmp2.exe /SwapTo:64" from an ELEVATED (admin) cmd.exe prompt and then set registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\wmplayer.exe, "Path" to be "%Programfiles%\Windows Media Player". To undo that, reset the "Path" value and then run "unregmp2.exe /SwapTo:32" from an elevated cmd.exe prompt. Cheers, -Zach -- Speaking for myself only.
