Vista Tutorial - Automatically connect to wireless on boot-up

I am using Vista Home Premium. When I boot up my wireless connection on my
lap top to the router it won't connect automatically. I need to go through
the manual routine of diagnose and repair and it then connects. Takes time
and a real bother to wait for it all to happen. I have saved the connection
and checked the 'automatically connect ...'. I am using the WEP - 128
encription.

Please help as I am missing something here in the configuration or ??

first of all, WEP is NOT safe. try WPA2 or WPA. after you've made
this change, please post the complete text output of

ipconfig /all

from an elevated command prompt. are you hibernating or shutting
down the laptop? does the router have the latest firmware? what
brand and hardware version router?

Thanks Barb for your advice. I'll give answers to your questions below as
well as add my notes as I tried to have the lap top connect automatically. I
changed from WEP to WPA - Personal [I don't seem to have WPA2]. Encryption:
TKIP. Security Key: entered. Just before doing this on the laptop, I
naturally changed the router through my PC. The router is a Siemens SC567
from Telus (our telecom in British Columbia) - installed about 2 weeks ago
when I upgraded the high speed to what they call high speed enhanced - faster
download.

I have been shutting down the notebook - haven't used hibernation.

From my notes, I offer the following which hopefully may also shed some light.

Brought up Network & Sharing Center.
- clickec on manage network connection. Wireless network connection:
Enabled, Shared.
Connect to a network - select a network to connect to: no network showing.
- Diagnose why windows cannot find any additional network. Identifying
problem. States:"the Windows Wireless Service is not running on this computer
[question Barb: I'm not sure how to set this to running?]
Start Windows Wireless Service. Repairing. States: "The problem has been
resolved"

Gives only limited connectivity.

Connect to network. Windows can't connect to "TopDrawer"[name of my network].
-Diagnose problem. Problem resolved is stated.

Then it says: "There might be a problem with 1 or more network adapters on
this computer. [I have it hardwired now to this notebook and working fine]
States: Wireless association failed due to an unknown reason.

I then connected the cable to this notebook and OK.

A very long winded response but I hope it is helpful. Please let me know if
I can provide you with other info. I am using a Toshiba Satellite purchased
last March with OEM - Vista Home Premium. I updated the network card driver
about 2 weeks ago. The network wireless card is: Intel (R)PRO/wireless
3945ABG network connection. The other network adapter is: Intel (R) PRO/10VE
network connection.

To my knowledge, I am not using an Intel Utility to manage the wireless. In
fact, I wasn't aware of any such thing. I have just been going to the Vista
Network sharing......

The driver is Intel, date: 30/10/06, version 10.6.0.29. Signature: MS
Windows hardware Compatibility. I clicked on the Update driver to be sure I
had the latest and apparently I have according to the response. It also
stated that this device is working properly.

I went to the URL you cited and downloaded the driver
v11.1.1.0_VT_Drivers.zip dated 5/25/07. Extracted the file and clicked on
DPInst32.exe and got the wizard "Welcometo the Device Driver. It started to
install and got the message that Intel (NET w2v32)net (03/06/2007 9.1.1.15)
failed and Intel (NET w4v32)net (04/30/2007 11.1.1.11) failed. So it wouldn't
install.

I am running on the very edge of any knowledge I may have here. Have I
downloaded the correct driver? and should I be uninstalling the current
driver? or another problem.

another thing, run services.msc, scroll to the bottom of the list
and make sure WLAN Auto Config is started and set to automatic.
