windows xp to vista

i currently have windows xp on my home pc and my son has just bought a lap
top that runs on vista is it possible to run the lap top wirelessly via a
router as at present i am unable to get a network i am trying to connect
using a cable connection

If both computers connect to the same router, they should be able to access
each other.
