Dropped Internet Connnection related to Base Filtering Engine

I have two hard wired PCs running Windows Vista Ultimate. Every few hours,
one of the two will drop their ability to connect to the internet "page not
found". The other will work just fine. Rebooting the PC will fix the problem,
though that's not the optimal solution. (I'm running the Trend Micro Internet
Security Antivirus/Firewall package on one machine and the Windows Firewall
on the other.)

After much trial & error, I have found that I can restablish the internet
connection by stopping and then starting the Base Filtering Engine. Is the
service is the cause of the problem or a result of it? Can/should I disable
this service?

As we know BFE has som eissues. Have you try Vista update? Otherwise, SP1
may fix these issues.

Re: Dropped Internet Connnection related to Base Filtering Engine

I'm up to date on all the Vista Update downloand and the application
compatibility patch. It seems odd to my that I can't find any mention of this
anywhere in the Microsoft Knowledgebase. (BTW, I initially thought the
problem was with my router and I replaced it with no luck.)

Re: Dropped Internet Connnection related to Base Filtering Engine

out of curiosity, when a machine is in this state, what happens if
you open an elevated cmd prompt and run

ipconfig /flushdns [enter]

does this change anything?

Re: Dropped Internet Connnection related to Base Filtering Engine

I tried that, too. Does not help.
Also used Microsoft's "diagnose and repair" function. It says there is a
problem with the connection, tries to repair it by resetting the adapter, but
ultimately fails.

One other oddity: On one occasion I had a session of Virtual PC 2007 running
in a window and accessing the internet. Then my Vista internet connection
failed, but the Virtual PC connection kept going. How the heck does that
happen?

that's weird, and to be honest, I don't know.
are any power management features turned on for these NICs? is there
data being transferred when they "stop"?

Re: Dropped Internet Connnection related to Base Filtering Engine

I agree that it is very weird. No power options are turned on for the NICs. I
also can't locate anything in the Event Viewer indicating a problem.

I did discover that the Internet Connection Sharing service was turned on
and that the Base Filtering Engine interacts with that service, so I turned
ICS off yesterday. Only time will tell if that's the solution to the issue.
