Network icon vanished from system tray

Most odd...my network icon has vanished from the system tray. Option is now
unchecked and greyed out in Properties, Notification Area. It was there
last night, just disappeared on booting up this morning.

Re: Network icon vanished from system tray

Just run Windows Update and download the latest patches.

This is a recurring problem for me. Both the network and volume icons are grayed out in the notification area options Properties for the Task Bar Notification Area. Rebooting does not fix it.
There must be something more going on here.
I have all of the updates installed.
I have looked in the registry for the items mentioned in anther thread for XP, but they are not present in the Vista Registry.

Re: Network icon vanished from system tray

The following steps worked for me

Delete the 2 keys as per the screenshot

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify]

End and start the Explorer.exe again.

Re: Network icon vanished from system tray

Great fix guys. Not only does my laptop NOT give me the option of using the AERO interface anymore, the icon is still missing. What's it going to take to "fix" this?

Reinstall?

Re: Network icon vanished from system tray

I had Sound & Network icon missing & options greyed out. Logging out/latest updates/etc failed to fix.
However, deleting
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify]
"PastIconsStream"
"IconStreams"
finally worked for me
