Vista - Home Network - Vista and XP Pro

I am trying to network a Vista computer and an XP Pro computer using a
Netgear router. I have setup the network on both computers, but neither
computer can see each other. I am sure that it is a simple setting that I
am overlooking, but the solution is evading me.

Any Thoughts?

I have 3 XP computers and one Vista Computer sitting behind a Netgear
Wireless router in my home network. I can see all machines from any of them.
Of the 3 XP desktop computers, two of them are connected to the router by
cat 5 LAN cables and one of these is set up as a server with multiple hard
drives and all my printers hooked up to it. The third XP desktop computer
has a wireless card. The VISTA computer is a laptop and connects wirelessly
Here is what I did:

1. Make sure all computers have the same Workgroup name.
2. Turn on sharing and share the drives and the folders you want to see
from the other computers.
3. On the Vista computer I turned off “Password Protected Sharing�

Need to have EXACTLY the same account name and password on all computers you

I still haven't figured out how to get the print server on the router to map
to Vista. The NETGEAR application for adding the server works for XP, but
not for VISTA. I get "addPort Failed" - no help, and no other information.
VISTA can see the router and the print server port, but won't map it. I
tried disabling the firewalls entirely, but that didn't help (I turned the
firewalls back on right away).

I think the firewall is causing your problems. You can downgrade the
firewall protection, find the port, then add it as an exception to the
firewall, which will allow you to restore the firewall to a safe
configuration.

I spent 3 hours screwing around with this before I got it work.

Try to diagnose the problem, using logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all",
"net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (Download
browstat, and note how to run a command window, in Vista, as admin!):
