Vista - Can't copy large files between Vista Computers and Windows 2003 Server R2

I have a Windows 2003 R2 x64 (all current SPs and updates installed) and 3
Windows Vista machines (also al X64 versions). When trying to copy a
(large - maybe 50MB +) file from the Windows 2003 Server to the Vista
Machines (the Server Shared folder is mapped to a drive in Vista) - I will
get an error like "There is a problem access I:\bigfile.txt - make sure you
are connected to the Network and try again"
Once in a while I will see "Error 0x8007003A"
I can copy those files just fine from Windows 2003 to another Windows 2003
machine or Windows XP machines...

Sorry, I am a bit unclear about this issue. To better address this issue,
could you please help collecting some more information?

1. May I know which kind of environment these computers are in? Is it a
domain or workgroup environment?

2. Please perform the following tests, and let me know the results:

1) Try to update your network adapter driver or reinstall your network
adapter driver.

In some cases, if the network adapter driver is corrupt or is incompatible,
we may encounter some unexpected connection problems. Therefore, please
check the network adapter manufacturer's website or contact them directly
to whether an updated version of device driver is available. Please ensure
that we should use drivers for x64 operating systems.

2) Disable the firewall on both the client and the server, and then try to
copy the same file. Is it working well? Firewall might cause this kind of
network sharing issue.

3) You can create or put some small files in this folder, which is much
smaller than 50M. Try again. Does the copying work well this time?

4) Can you access these Windows Vista computers from the Windows Server
2003 R2 one? Can you access these Windows Vista from your previous Windows
Server 2003? Can you access Windows Server 2003 R2 from Windows Vista by
UNC (by clicking Start-> Run -> type "\\server\shared folder")?

Please let me know these results for further resolving. If anything is
unclear, please feel free to let me know.

1, The 2003 Server in question is a DC, but the Vista machines are not on
that domain (or any domain). All the network drivers are current 64Bit
drivers. Note that Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server machines on the same
network have no difficulty with large files and that particular 2003 server.
Also, the Vista machines can copy large files from another Win2003 server
(regular Windows 2003 Server 64Bit, SP2) - the issue only occurs between
this one 2003 server and (all) the Vista machines. There is no conceptual
issue, the Vista machines have drives mapped to the Win2003 shares, I can
see and browser folders etc.

2, Firewalls are turned off

3, Yes, I have about 16GB worth of photos on that server (each 3MB or
less) - and can copy the whole directory with folders and photos no problem

4, Yes to all. Now accessing as such has never been the problem. I have not
tried creating a shared folder on a Vista machine and trying to copy to
there from the 2003R2 machine

Other comments

a, I can log into the 2003R2 server using terminal services with the Vista
machines drives accessible, and then successfully copy to them

b, If I open a 600MB movie file from the vista machine on the 2003R2 server
in Media Player, I can watch the entire show/movie no problem. If I try to
copy or move the file, I will get the errors.

c, There is Virtual Server R2 installed on the Windows 2003 Server (The
Vista machines can copy large files from another 2003 server with Virtual
Server R2 installed)

d, copying large files from the Vista Machine TO the 2003 Server seems to
work, but much slower than it should be - to the point that copying a 1GB
file can take close to a day (both machines connected to the same 1GB
switch. (Another Vista machine is connected through WiFi on a N Network
(access point connected to teh 1GB switch) and the 3rd Vista machine is
connected to a 100MB switch that is connected to the 1GB switch

e, I had a friend's 32 Bit Vista laptop yesterday, and it has the same
problem with large files

Also, try disabling network autotuning (run the following with
Administrative priveleges):

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

and then reboot. I have had MAJOR issues between Vista and R2 boxes,
but not with regular 2003 boxes. This is fixed with SP1, but since
SP1 isn't out yet, the autotuninglevel (+ maybe the rss) workaround is
the trick.

The RSS command is:

netsth int tcp set global rss=disabled

We can export all the events in "Windows Logs" after this error occurs.
Please pay more attention to these events marked Critical, Warning, Error,
especially in the "Windows Logs->System" pane.

3. We can use a tool named Microsoft Product Support's Reporting to get
more information about our computer situation. This tool facilitates the
gathering of critical system and logging information used in
troubleshooting support issues. After this tool stops automatically,
navigate to the folder "C:\Windows\MPSReports\Aliance\cab" and please send
all these files back to me.

You can also get more information about how to use it in the same page (the

4. A network capture may be more helpful.

As we can't get enough information about the networking from the Event
Viewer or the MPSReports, we can capture the network packages by Network
Monitor. Run the monitor before you try to copy the large files, and stop
it after you encounter this error. Export these captures to a file, and
please send it back to me.
