Access Denied to Vista PC files

I have three desktop pcs in a home (private network). Two XP, one wirless
connection to router, one wired to router and the Vista pc is wired to
router. The printer is connected via USB to the Vista PC.

All three have the same workgroup and can discover each other on the network.

I am able to print from the two XP units through the Vista PC. I can access
the files on both of the XP units from the Vista PC. The Vista directory
indicates shared on the sharing tab \\dad\od2659 Permission is for Everyone
in the Group or user names. I'm not running any third party firewall tools.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

Wow - I had exact same situation (exactly the same!). Solved
it earlier today by opening drive properties, click security
tab, then select edit, the select add, click advanced,
ensure "Users, Groups, or built in security principles" is
selected in object types, click Find Now, scroll down list
and select 'Guest', click 'OK' and back on out to the
'Security' tab, high light the new user name 'Guest' that
you just added, select the allowed actions in the 'Allow'
and/or 'Deny' columns, click on 'Apply' and then 'OK'.

This works for each of the three shared drives I've set up
this way.
