WEP security key changes itself and I can't change it back

I have a Gateway Laptop with VISTA basic. My wireless router is Westell
versalink 327w. My WEP security key changes from what I enter. The code I
enter is 10 digits. The code that comes up when I view my security settings
on my network has been changed to an 8 digit security code. I have deleted
the network in the manage wireless networks screen. That worked 1 time. Its
like something will not allow me to enter my own security key. The unit has
been known to start working wirelessly after having been connected by a LAN
cable for awhile. Gateway is of no help and Best Buy sent it off and
returned it to me unrepaired after 3 weeks. It will connect fine to
unsecured networks but I would prefer not to run my network unsecured

There is a reset button on your router to start again.

Or you can delete everything while you are in the router software.

    Who set it up?
You should have a SSID Network and Security Key set up in there by you, or
    someone you instructed to.

And DON'T run without Security Key, as your neighbours will steal your
    bandwidth.

Sorry I should have explained my situation better. It is not the router that
won't hold the settings . It is my wireless connection on my laptop. I have
other computers hooked up wirelessly and they all function properly.
Another thing that has shown itself is that I cannot connect wirelessly
unless I connect the power cable and the LAN to my laptop. AT this point I
can connect to the wireless network and disconnect the LAN cable and power
cable and the Wireless connection will remain active until I shut down. This
    is quite bizzare.

Re: WEP security key changes itself and I can't change it back

I experience EXACTLY the same thing in Vista. I am experiencing it on 2 different Vista PC's, one home premium 32 bit one home premium 64 bit. My WEP password is 10 characters long, I enter it, having to plug my LAN cable in to get Windows to see the network. The wireless button and adapter is enabled the whole time, and as soon as I plug LAN cable in, it connects to LAN and Wireless simultaneously. Then I can disconnect LAN and it will stay connected to wireless, however it gets changed to an 8 character key (which I cannot see or reveal) and it will not connect until I enter the correct 10 digit key again. Just like previous poster, there is another computer on the network, on XP which does not have this problem and does not disconnect nor have problems seeing the wireless network. We are both in the same workgroup, this has been a problem for 2 weeks. I've reset the modem, flushed DNS multiple times, assigned new I.P. addresses, disabled and enabled DHCP, etc. It is of note that these 2 PC's on Vista, are also from Best Buy, however, it also happened with a Compaq nc6400 running Ubuntu with Windows 7 Virtualized. Shawn and I would appreciate some wizardry here to figure out what's going on!
P.S. I would just enter a WPA password, however it is incompatible with my setup.

    Thx in advance,

    Doyle
