| | RE: permission Vista requires user accounts to match on each machine. Make sure your vista machine has the same user account information as the XP machine, and that the user has permissions to access the share. A password will be required. Vista has dumped the "open share" that XP had, that would allow anybody to connect to the share without first authenticating. "Stan" wrote: Quote: > I have a router for my two computer network. | | RE: permission As far as I know the letter Z is reserved by Windows. Use a different letter. "Stan" wrote: Quote: > I have a router for my two computer network. | | RE: permission You will find how to set permissions here when you get it sorted.. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. How to give Permissions are there, too. If you are running Norton, Trend Micro, McAfee, etc’s Firewall, check its settings to make sure it allows file and printer sharing.. 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard. "Stan" wrote: Quote: > I have a router for my two computer network. The old "... access denied ..." error can have many causes, including physical disconnection. The more normal is either permissioning on the resource computer (aka server) or a personal firewall or other security device on the resource computer. There are other issues that are new to computers running Vista. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/12/windows-xp-and-vista-on-lan-together.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/1...-together.html You're not yet providing a lot of details or diagnostics about the problem. For better help, lets look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (Download browstat, and note how to run the command window, in Vista, as admin!): <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...#AskingForHelp -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
