| Guest | a new problem with XP and Vista sharing. I have a network based on a Vista Desktop, wireless Vista Laptop, and a XP desktop. The network works fine between the two Vista machines but the XP desktop can access all files which are shared between the Vista desktop and laptop even though I have not set up any permissions to allow that. Secondly, I am unable to access any files on the XP desktop from the Vista desktop or laptop. It tells me I do not have permission to do so; even though I have assigned these folders to be shared on the XP desktop. From what I have been reading it sounds like networking between XP and Vista is fraught with errors. I would just like have the XP machine share the printer and not have access to either of my Vista machines. If anyone has any suggestion, I am all ears. -- Christopher Fazio VMD |

| Guest | RE: a new problem with XP and Vista sharing. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. Permissions/Share info is there as well. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall. 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard to include Vista in your “New” Network, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer to it. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "Chris Fazio" wrote: Quote: > I have a network based on a Vista Desktop, wireless Vista Laptop, and a XP > desktop. Hi Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared. | Guest | Re: a new problem with XP and Vista sharing. Jack, Your XP patch for mapping the network has worked. But the XP desktop still is able to access files which are permitted between the two Vista machines and the XP desktop does not have permission to these files. I am unable to access any files on the XP desktop from the Vista desktop or laptop. It tells me I do not have permission to do so; even though I have assigned these folders to be shared on the XP desktop. Some of these folder on the network have been deleted off the XP desktop but they still appear on the network. I am stumped about this one. -- Christopher Fazio VMD "Jack (MVP-Networking)." <jack@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:eT3L6MwfIHA.4760@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi > Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network > settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html > As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is > allowed to be shared. > Vista File and Printer Sharing- > http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx > Windows XP File Sharing - > http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304040 > Printer Sharing XP - > http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...utt_july2.mspx > Windows Native Firewall setting for Sharing XP - > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875357 > Windows XP patch for Sharing with Vista - > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 > Jack (MVP-Networking). > > "Chris Fazio" <cjfazio@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:ujf2GkufIHA.5260@xxxxxx Quote: >>I have a network based on a Vista Desktop, wireless Vista Laptop, and a XP >>desktop.
