Vista to XP networking problem

Having read many threads I am still unable to solve my networking issue.
Here's my setup.
Desktop on XP Home (SP2)
Laptop on Vista Home Premium

I want to create a network via LAN so I can transfer files back and forth. I
also need to be able to share printers. I have so far tried the following
things:

Changed workgroup name to "WORKGROUP" on both systems
Installed Link-Layer Topology Discovery patch on XP system
Turned off all firewalls (Windows and third party)
Turned on "Network Discovery", "File Sharing", "Public Folder Sharing",
"Printer Sharing" on the Vista laptop
Run the "Network Setup Wixard" on XP
Manually assigned IPs to both systems
Automatically signed IPs to both systems
Combinations of the 2 above
Pinging does not work on either computer

I can "see" the XP on Vista but cannot access the files. I get error message
"Windows cannot access \\[comp name]\" of error code 0x80070035.

Why can't I seem to get these to network?

What I actually wanted to do was wirelessly transfer the files (both laptop
and desktop are have wireless adapters). Once the networks were in place I
was going to buy syncing software to automatically update both laptop and
desktop. However, this is for the future. I tried LAN when wirless failed.

Can you help with a step-by-step on how to setup this small network
wirelessly (or by LAN).

Thanks

The first suspicion is that you have some third-party network
security software installed and not properly configured. The
second is that the built-in firewall is not properly configured.
But there are several more possible causes.

Check http://winhlp.com/node/179 for details.

Re: Vista to XP networking problem

I have the same problem. Read the threads set everything right and I still
cant link my trusty XP to the Vista. The Vista is still nude and the XP's
TrendMicro will be shut down.

RE: Vista to XP networking problem

If you are running Norton, Trend, McAfee, etc, make sure that file and
printer sharing(or network sharing) is allowed in their Firewall Exceptions
for your profile.
