Vista - Computers don't see each other

Office computer, running XP, cable modem connected to Linksys WRT54GS
wireless router.

Studio computer in another room, running Vista Home Premium, connected to
the WRT54GS using the Linksys Compact-G Wireless USB with Speedbooster.

Both computers see the router fine. Both are sharing the Internet
connection fine. The Linksys Advisor shows both computers on the network,
and McAfee sees and is monitoring both computers.

But I cannot get Windows on either side to “see� the other computer so I can
get to and share files. Network Places shows me the router, but not the
other computer.

The router is set to “private network,� which is where it’s supposed to be
for computers on the network to see each other. AP Isolation is disabled on
the router, which it’s supposed to be. And all firewall settings on both
machines appear to be where they are supposed to be so that the other
computer will be trusted.

Which leaves Windows as the most likely culprit. I'm sure it's got to be
just one simple setting, but I've worked on this for days and can't find a
thing that works.

Sure would appreciate some more things to try!

Have you enabled file sharing on both computers? If yes, can you ping each
other by IP? Or this how to may help.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and
passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you
have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer.

Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in
Start >All Programs >Accessories >Communications), and tell the Wizard to
enable File and Printer Sharing.
Or > Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a Home or Small
Office Network.
