| x64 | Vista PC cannot ping XP machine Hi, I managed to get my PC to communicate but only one way. I have connected via an ethernet cat5 cable. I am also running McAfee on both PCs. I can get the XP to talk to the Vista machine but not the other way round. I managed to copy files from the XP to Vista with no real hitches. However, when in vista and trying to open up the shared view of the XP PC I get unable to communicate. Error message says tried to ping IP Address but got no response. The firewals are set up to enable file sharing for both with no password protection etc. Can anybody help. |

When you say "firewals are set up to enable file sharing", which firewalls are you mentioning? Check McAfee carefully for anti-worm components which may need configuration. <http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html> http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005...ther-help.html And check for LSP / Winsock corruption, on both computers. <http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html> http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005...-layer-in.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://networking.nitecruzr.net/ |

| | RE: Vista PC cannot ping XP machine http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. Permissions/Share info is there as well. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed) 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer. Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in Start >All Programs >Accessories >Communications), and tell the Wizard to enable File and Printer Sharing. Or > Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a Home or Small Office Network. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "MikeG" wrote: Quote: > > Hi, > > I managed to get my PC to communicate but only one way. | Vista Home Premium 64bit | Re: Vista PC cannot ping XP machine Had the same problem. After going though numerous blogs, forums, tech support, etc., i finally was able to resolve the issue on my own simply by correctly configuring the McAfee firewall settings on the XP machine. From the McAfee console, select Internet and Network and click on configure. Click on Advanced and, in the Firewall column, click on Networks. Make sure you have the IP Address and/or range configured as Trusted. |
