| | Vista laptop won't connect to XP desktops/printers over the networ A few things first: XP to XP network was and is working great. I can print over the network and everything. Workgroup names are the same on all computers (MSHOME.) I followed every tutorial for setting up a home network between XP and Vista computers that I could find. Everything appears to be in proper working order for the network to function, but it does not. I can ping the XP computer from the Vista laptop via computer name and IP address. I can connect to the Vista laptop's Public folders on my XP desktop just fine. My problem(s): I click on view full map in Network and Sharing center on Vista, and I can see all the XP computers (because I installed the LLTD fix) sometimes I can click on the computers, sometimes I can't. I don't know why that is. Next, clicking on "View computers and devices" only shows my Laptop and router. Sometimes the other computers show up too, usually after a few tries or refreshes. When the XP computers do show up, and I double click to try to view the shared folders, I get the following error: "Windows cannot access \\Computer Name. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Error code: 0x80070005 Access is denied." Clicking on diagnose says this: "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection." My firewalls are set to allow computers on the network. I've even turned them off and just let Windows Firewall do it's thing. I really don't understand the spelling error. I think if that can be fixed, the network would work just fine. |

Can see the XP computers in the full map, but they still don't always load when I click "view computers and devices." Typing " \\Computer " into the run dialog gives me the same "Windows cannot access, check spelling" error as before. I don't understand what spelling I'm checking when it gives me the same error when I connect using " \\IP ADDRESS " Like I said, I followed every resource I could find from MS about getting this to work, so Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, printer sharing, media sharing, are all set to ON. My network is set up as a private network in Vista. Everything SHOULD work, but clearly it's not. |

| | Re: Vista laptop won't connect to XP desktops/printers over the networ I had a similar problem with Vista connecting to a printer that was connected to a network computer running XP. I tried everything I could think of including all the stuff MS suggests concerning making the printer visible on the network and enabling sharing, etc. I found the answer in a TechRepublic item that worked around the problem by defining a "local?" printer on the Vista laptop. It might be a solution for you: - On Vista PC go to "Control Panel" - "Printers" - "Add printer". - Believe or not, click "Add a local printer" (I know you want to add a network printer but that way it doesn't work). - Click "Create a new port" - "Local Port" - "Next" - In the next box you have to enter a port name like this: "\\PCname\Printer name" where "PC name" is the network name of the XP PC or Network Share where you have the printer and "Printer name" is the network name of that printer. Be careful with this names. Check in your XP PC "Control Panel" - "Printers and faxes" - "your printer" - right click - "share" - "share resources name" - Choose the manufacturer and printer model of the printer you are adding. - Now the printer will be added and you can print a test page or print something to test it. -- tripap Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

I really don't understand what the issue is here, if everything is set up correctly. The only REAL issue I'm having is the "Check Spelling" error. |
