ICS and Unidentified Network

I have a Vista machine and an XP Pro machine. The Vista has 2 NICs, NIC 1
connected to the cable moden and NIC 2 connected to XP using a crossover
cable. Vista is set for ICS.

Internet works fine on both machines, always.

XP can see and access Vista's shared folders, always.

Vista cannot see XP. NIC 2 comes up "unidentified network" and is set
"public". I change NIC 2 to "private", then after a brief delay XP becomes
visible and accessible. NIC 2 still labeled "unidentified network".

On reboot NIC 2 reverts to "public".

I'm sure I have sonething configured wron. I appreciate in advance any
help. IP info follows:

Vista following reboot:

Re: ICS and Unidentified Network

Thanks for your reply. I did not have SP1 so I installed it. Afterward
neither ICS or networking would work. I spent some time and could not get it
fixed, so I uninstalled SP1.

This machine was built for Vista (came with Home Basic). NIC 2 on Vista is
identical to NIC 1 on XP and they are both Vista compatible.

I followed the link you suggested and tried many things that I read about to
no avail. Default Gateway keeps coming up. Right now on Vista NIC 2 Default
Gateway is blank. If I look at XP's IP address (DHCP assigned) and type that
address into Vista NIC 2 Default Gateway, the network is recognized and works
fine. But of course that does not survive a reboot of either machine.

What should the Default Gateway be? Is it correct to leave it blank?

Thanks again to anyone who replies.

Re: ICS and Unidentified Network

I am not sure the settings now. Basic rule is to assign default gateway on
the Internet NIC and keep blank on the LAN NIC.

Re: ICS and Unidentified Network

Problem resolved (after driving me nuts since February, 2007).

I changed the client (XP) machine to a static IP address with the Vista NIC
2 address as Default Gateway. I had tried this before and it didn't work,
but this time I also used the Vista NIC 2 address for the DNS Server. Then I
used the client address for the Vista NIC 2 Default Gateway. Voila! The
network is recognized and I have rebooted each machine several times with no
problems.

Thanks again for your help. Chicagotech.net is a really valuable resource
and I appreciate you pointing me that way.

RE: ICS and Unidentified Network

Hi guys, new in here with a big problem.I thought I would continue in here instead of creating a new topic.Ive been everywhere searching for solution to my problem... Just after installing SP1 on my vista desktop Ive been getting a yellow triangle to my connection symbol down at the system tray... Ive tried everything like uninstalling nortons with their own uninstaller, changing from public connection to private, playing around with everything but nothing... My laptop does though connect without problem (also running Vista) which means the router is working. The cable is tested at work and works. Well ipconfig/all doesnt tell me much, this it how it looks: Windows IP configuration host name............admin-pc primary Dns suffix........ IP routing enabled........NO wins proxy enabled......NO Ethernet adapter local area connection connection-specific DNS suffix...: Description..............................: VIA Rhine II Comp. fast ethernet adapter Physical address......................: 00-13-8F-70-03-EF DHCP enabled.........................:Yes Autoconfiguration enabled........:Yes Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.3.238 (Preferred) Subnet mask...........................: 255.255.0.0 Default gateway......................: NetBIOS over tcpip..................: Enabled Tunnel adapter local area connection* 6: Media state.............................: media disconnected Connection specific DNS suffix..: Description..............................: isatap.(AOEF4427-1126-4670-8A32-57573FEFDCOE) Physical address......................o-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-eo DHCP Enabled.........................: No Autoconfiguration enabled........: Yes Tunnel adapter local area connection* 7: Media state.............................:media disconnected Connection specific DNS suffix..: Description.............................: Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface Physical address.....................: 02-00-54-55-4E-01 DHCP Enabled........................: No Autoconfiguration enabled.......: YesI would appreciate any help, thanx.

No, please do not hijack someone else's thread. Create a new post using
guidelines in the "How to Post" section below. You are not posting on a
forum as you think you are; you are posting at one of those websites that
scrapes Usenet newsgroup postings. You will be better served - as will the
people who would like to help you - if you set up a real newsreader
instead. This is very easy to do:

Since you are using a web interface, you may not realize that this is really
a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn to use
a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use
Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have it.
