| vista 32 | Can't connect Remote Desktop between Vista and XP. Hi, I am trying to connect to computers. One has Vista Ultimate and the other has XP Proffesional. I have enabled the Remote Destop options on both OS's but neither machine is being found/listed in the Remote Desktop Connection screen. How can i fix this problem. Also i have opened up my XP remote desktop connection port on my router, but i cannot find my port number in Vista for remote desktop. Anyone know what that number is? Thanks. P.S. Vista is connected to my router through the RJ wire and XP is connected through wireless. |

| vista 32 | Re: Can't connect Remote Desktop between Vista and XP. Which one do i ping, the router address assigned to the xp, or the xp's real IP? I tried the address assigned to the router of both my computers and they both pinged fine. I do not use any security software, only what's installed in vista/xp. I also pinged using the computer's ip address and that was fine. |

| vista 32 | Re: Can't connect Remote Desktop between Vista and XP. I also want to point out that when i'm in the router's html settings page, I see 2 computers with my vista computers name and 1 name on my xp. I only own 2 computers. Is my router being hacked by someone in proximity to the wireless??? |

That would only be necessary to allow Remote Desktop access from computers on the Internet. For that, both XP and Vista use port 3389. Just type the name of the computer you want to connect to in the Remote Desktop Connection screen. The computer doesn't have to appear in the menu. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. | vista 32 | Re: Can't connect Remote Desktop between Vista and XP. Ok I have tried to type the name of the computers into the remote desktop connection list on both XP and Vista and neither worked. I also tried to type in the IP address of each computer and this did not work either. On XP I typed in my vista machine name and it prompted me for credentials. I do not have a name and password on either maching for logon. I get the error message on Vista: "Remote Connection cannot find the remote computer." I get a similar error message on XP. Any Ideas? |

| | Re: Can't connect Remote Desktop between Vista and XP. On Vista, use ipconfig to find the IP address. On the XP do: telnet "Vista IP address" 3389. Does the telnet get error? If yes, 1. make sure you have enabled the remote desktop. 2) Try to start both computers with clean boot. | vista 32 | Re: Can't connect Remote Desktop between Vista and XP. Hi, I tried the telnet from XP and could not connect. I have enabled both computers Remote Desktop through Remote tab in computer's properties. Still did not work. Should i telnet from Vista? I tried Safe mode networking, and clean boot also. Not working, I also tried to open a port on my belken wireless g router. I forwarded the port to the vista macine. Still could not telnet connect from XP. I also forwarded that port to the XP machine and did not work. Disabled all firewalls, still did not work. |

Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Ok i guess here's where i messed up during setup. I did not setup a password or user name on either computer, because I am the only user. How do i back-track and setup a username/password for the network on both the vista and xp. FYI, i'd like to control each computer with the other through remote desktop. I do not have software firewall, unless its installed in my router. Which i believe i have forwarded the correct ports, anyway. I am using windows in-built xp and vista firewalls. |
