Spooler Error - Windows cannot connect a shared printer on XP Pro.

Greetings,

When trying to connect to a shared Brother Laser (HL-2040) from a Windows
Vista machine (upgraded from XP Pro) over a wireless network I get the
following error:-

"Windows cannot connect to the printer. The server print spooler service is
not running. Please restart the spooler on the server or restart the server
machine."

The printer is a USB Windows GDI device that works fine on both XP and Vista
as a local printer. Prior to the upgrade to Vista the machine could print to
the printer under XP.

Other shared files and folders work fine. Guest, Anonymous and Network all
have print rights. Firewalls both set to allow Microsoft File and Printer
Sharing. I have Googled and scanned these newsgroups and found others with
similar problems.

Has anyone found a solution yet?

Wait for the vendor to provide driver support

Re: Spooler Error - Windows cannot connect a shared printer on XP Pro.

Greetings,

Driver works fine locally on both XP and Vista. Is there some extra,
special, driver associated with shared printers?

RE: Spooler Error - Windows cannot connect a shared printer on XP Pro.

Hi,

had a similar problem with the spooler service.
After I deleted and recreated the user profile for the affected users,
everything is working a-ok. It seems as if there are some information stored
within a migrated user profile which do not work that well with the new
spooler service.

cheers
Martin

Re: Spooler Error - Windows cannot connect a shared printer on XP Pro.

I have the same problem, unable to install Brother 2030 over the wireless
network.

Sharing from an XP SP2 machine (USB port).

I have not tried to install the machine directly, like you said yours
worked.

I have tried to install a Samsung ML-6040 to the Vista RC1, but it does not
recognise the XP driver.

Are we shure it is not the XP machine that blocks access to the Brother
2030?

Regards

George

you are doing better than me. I can't even get my brother mfc-420cn to
even install, i am the administrator(and only person onthis computer) and it
says i need my own permission to continue and then it won't let me give that
permission say i don't have proper authorization.....any ideas

I found the fix to the error message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. The local print service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."

I tested it and it works great!! Just do this:

On the vista machine that wants to access the shared XP printer, do this:
1) Install the printer as a local printer using the Windows XP (or if available Vista drivers).
2) Go to the command prompt, type:
net use LPT# \\server\printer /persistent:yes
Change # to 1-3(whichever LPT port isnt in use), change "server" to the computer name that has the printer, and change "printer" to the shared printer name
3) Now go into the properties of the local printer and change the port to the new port you chose, i.e. LPT3
4) Print a test page!

Enjoy!

Help with printer

I went to command prompt but when I typed in " net use LPT# \\server\printer /persistent:yes " It wouldn't work. I'm pretty sure I missed something I'm having the same trouble as all of you. I upgraded just a week ago and have been pulling out my hair in frustration trying my best to search for a solution. Please help. Thanks!
