Vista - Gigabit is slower than expected

Hi!
I have two PCs with Vista Ultimate SP1. Both of them have gigabit ethernet cards and are connected to a gigabit switch. Switch recognizes the PCs to have gigabit cards. However when I transfer a file from one to the other speed is less than 12MB/sec (less than 100Mbit). I would expect it to be around 120MB/sec (1000Mbit).
Any ideas?
I searched several forums and I saw that gigabit cards drivers do not have the 1000Mbit option in their settings. Why is that?
Any chance of achieving real gigabit speeds?

I think it depends on the quality of the cable... not sure though. My guess is its Cat5e cable not a normal Cat 5 cable that you require. Look up the info on Wikipedia

The Cat 5e cable looks exactly like a Cat 5 cable but its supposed to be able to handle gigabit connections. Lemme see if I can dig up something more...

EDIT: found this on Wikipedia:

1000BASE-T (also known as IEEE 802.3ab) is a standard for gigabit Ethernet over copper wiring. It requires, at a minimum "Category 5 enhanced" (similar to 100BASE-TX Category 5 cable but twisted tighter), while Category 6 cable may also be used and is often recommended.

The systems themselves (drives, buses, etc) can't keep up. There's
very little hardware that can stream to the network above 100mbit and
most of that is not consumer level. You might be able to get a NAS
and/or NFS that could do better but you'd need a reason to have one.

Unless you have a lot of users and multi system traffic is an issue,
Gigabit is overkill.
