Creating an Ad-Hoc Network?

I know this has been asked before, but I can't find a solution. I want to set
up an ad-hoc network on my online PC so I can share its Internet connection.

The set up proceeds for a while, then I get an error message "Windows could
not set up <name of network>".

I've tried different security details, I get the same message.

Review procedure for ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) - compyers must be
members of the same workgroup - default is MSHOME.

Sorry, but I don't see the relevance of either of these points.

I have not got to the ICS stage, it's the set-up of the ad-hoc network that
causes problems. Similarly, the workgroup is not the issue, it's not a
problem connecting to the network, it's a problem with creating the network.

Also, the default is WORKGROUP, not MSHOME.

Apart from that, 10/10

Hi, NigelMercier,

Is this vista to vista, wired or wireless, if you can provide more details will enable more specific help

The host is running Vista, at present there are no other PCs involved.

Sorry I must be missing something you need at least 2 pc's to have a network, you can do the preparation work but untill you actually have two devices that can detect each other no vista ad-hoc network can exist

Surely there must be a stage where you set up the network on one PC, then a
second stage where you connect to it with another PC? I cannot do the first
stage.

Ok it may be a problem with the terminology.
An Ad-Hoc wireless network in vista is a function to create a temporary link between two computers in order to share files, for example it may be used to transfer from one laptop to another during a business meeting where the two computers are not normally on a network.

the first question I need to ask is how do you connect your existing laptop to the internet? If this is done wirelessly using a router then you already have a network and all you need to do to get access to the internet on a new computer is run the internet connection wizard on each additional computer.

You can use a computer to perform this router function, but to do so you will need Two network cards in the computer. This is of course a normal thing in today's laptops. What you would need to do is Connect the Ethernet wired port on the laptop to the broadband modem and set up your internet connection, then run the Internet connection sharing wizard to allocate addresses to the other computers on the wireless side.

In all cases all the involved devices (or at least two) need to be present in order to set up the network

Sorry, but I don't believe this. How can you set up a network between two
PCs where you have to configure them both at exactly the same time?
