simple file sharing?

Hi All,

I am trying to share files between two XP
computers and a Vista machine. Does Vista have anything
equivalent to XP's "use simple file sharing"?

Many thanks,
-T

Disabling 'password protected sharing' is the same thing as the simple
Guest sharing in XP.
If your XP is Pro it's better to switch off simple file sharing and to
leave password protected sharing on in Vista, but you do then need to
set permission for your users on the shares.
Perhaps get it going with simple sharing and then tighten it up.

Re: simple file sharing?

Hi
To enhance security Vista does not use simple sharing and some folders has
restricted sharing capacity as well beyond regular sharing.
If you want to grant access to some material to all that log on with NO
password or other permissions, I would suggest to do it by creating a folder
on your own under C:\ and setting its permission so that any one would be
allow to log to this specific folder (and its sub folders if needed) without
a password.
By setting the security tab. By doing so you do not intervene with the
secure set of rules that the OS set folders are adhering to.
In general, Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in
Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html
As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is
allowed to be shared.

Hi Jack and Tom,

Thank you for all the tips. I turned off passwords
and disables NetBIOS over TCP/IP. I installed non-routable
NetBEUI and now could not share to the web if I tried.

:-)

Many thanks,
-T
p.s. you get NetBEUI off of an XP disks from Extras.
Works fine in Vista.
