Vista - Extremely slow network connection / internet

I have installed Vista RC1 5600 on a few machines, but have a problem (on all
machines) where some sites are either incredibly slow or just seem to grind
to a halt and not load.

Some sites are ok e.g google, but most others including microsoft.com seem
to load a bit of the page, page title, but then stop. Iv'e tried using IE7
and also FireFox, but get the same problem.

Under internet options> lan settings, I do not have 'Automatically detect
settings' ticked. (though it is the same with it ticked) and I have also
tried turning off Phishing filter, protected mode and things like activex and
java.

The same sites open fine with IE7 or Firefox under windows XP. It is not
just internet pages either as downloads on Vista seem to be the same, e.g.
attempting to download firefox will gert about 20k, then stop. (on a 2mb line
-fine on XP)

I'm going to download RC1 5728, but I had the same problem with 5536 so not
holding my breath...

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem as you. But to try and throw some more
light on the problem i contacted our hosting company as it seems that all the
problem sites that i have seen are on the same hosting company (titan
internet).

They sent me a util that was supposed to trace a route back to them, sort of
a mixture between tracert and ping. That seemed to show there was a big
routing issue.

To cause a further issue, i can't get email from that server either or use
other browsers such as Firefox and Netscape. I personally think it is an
issue with the protocol stack, but am investigating that now.

I'll feed back if i find any info on it

How do you get this auto TCP disabled ?

We tried running "netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled"
on the command prompt on Vista.

We get the following message :
"Set global command failed on IPv4 The requested operation requires elevation.

Is someone aware what is happening here ? Why is this command failing.

We are logged in as Administrators

This has to be run as the real administrator. If you go to accesoiries in
there you have the CMD prompt right click and select run as admiistrator, in
there type the command line again, now it works.

As some others have experienced, I to had painfully slows network activity not just on the local network but also internet, generally all traffic. I applied the hotfix 931770, and the autotuninglevel=disabled hack but still my network connection was unusable so I uninstalled the hotfix and set autotuninglevel back to normal. My next approach so to look at the network card drivers, so I uninstalled my Realtek 8139/810x drivers selecting to delete them driver. Windows found the card and installed the driver back automatically which was odd as I selected to delete the driver. However, to my surprise my network speed was restored back to its full potential. With the network back I decided to perform a Windows update which showed an updated RealTek driver available, I installed the update and guess what? .....yes the network sh& itself and went back down to KB speed I’ve been plagued with for the past month or so. A simple driver roll back soon had that problem sorted. There was still one problem and that was the old 'Calculating time....' issue when transferring large files, which was soon sorted by reapplying hotfox 931770.

So if you have a RealTek 8139/810x network card and slow network issues I suggest sticking with the Vista supplied driver and not the newer windows update driver, it solved all my problem for me anyway. Thank.
