connecting to internet - cable connection

I am using Vista Home Premium, but I'm experiencing a problem with my Internet connection. I connect to Internet trough a cable connection (I have a modem). Vista identified my network card (a realtek rtl8168/8111 family pci-e gigabit ethernet nic). The only problem is that it does not identify the network connection. It says "access: local only" and, when I try to diagnose the problem it says ' Windows confirmed that "primary DNS Server" is currently online, but it is not responding to connection attempts at this time.... bla bla bla '. This does not solve my problem. Does anyone have any idea where the problem could?

If i plug this to my windows XP system it works fine.

Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

What does your cable company's tech support have to say about this? If you
don't want to bother talking to them, buy a router so both your computers
will have Internet access.

Re: connecting to internet - cable connection

On some cable systems only ONE machine is authorized access. To change
machines you might need to call your ISP and have them reset at their end
for your Vista machine. On some systems there is an automatic reset after
several hours of being disconnected.

If you follow Malke's advice you may have to call your ISP after connecting
the router to the cable modem, alternatively most routers allow what is
called MAC cloning so that the cable company thinks it is connected to what
is now your working XP machine. How you enable cloning will be covered in
your router instructions.

As I have two systems, I bought the router even and connected my both the computers to router. And System with windows XP works fine. I spoke with Cable company, He said "there is no Mac - binding " I retest the modem even. There is no problem with the Cable or not with the Lan Card- because it works locally fine. It does not connect to Internet. After many attempts of Enabling and Disabling of network card some times it detects the internet. I have tried maximum possible ways even reinstalling the OS and Drivers too.

Still any Suggesttion

Vista Home Premium 32bit

Re: connecting to internet - cable connection

Hi there,

I have the same problem with the same config, ie : one laptop toshiba with windows xp, one laptop asus with vista home premium 32bit with the same ethernet card (realtek rtl8168/8111 etc.), and a dlink dir300 router.

I get good connection with xp laptop, whether via the router or not, and connection with the vista laptop stopped on 21/01, even when I bypass the router.

I've tried a lot of different tricks (like disabling ipv6, static ip, etc.) but to no avail.

I even tried a system restore, but my oldest point is from the 22/01 (day after the connection stopped, coincidence ?).

Windows update has been on since I bought the laptop, and I didn't touch the drivers.

ISP (starhub) claims everything's fine on their side, they just said that my connection was a bit slow.

The whole thing worked fine for more than 3 months before that doomsday.

Let's narrow the search, it seems your problem started roughly the same time.
Who's your ISP? Do you have a system restore older than your problem ?
