Logon unsuccessful: windows is unable to log you on

Systems:

Desktop (Vista Home Premium x64) Hard line to router
Laptop (Vista Home Premium x32) Wireless connection to router

Here's the problem. Long ago, I managed to get it set up so I could log in to my desktop from my laptop and pull files I needed for the day to the hard drive. This still works just fine, 100% no problems!

Now, I'm trying to do it in reverse so that the desktop can log in to the laptop. Whenever I try to log in to the laptop from my desktop's network devices window, I get the "Logon unsuccessful: windows is unable to log you on" message.

What I've tried so far:
1. Windows firewall appears to be configured the same on both systems.
2. File Sharing is enabled in the Network and Sharing Center on both systems.
3. I tried using the vista support page's automatic workaround for administrative shares, but no dice. Even disabling UAC on the laptop had no effect.

The desktop's MAC address isn't in the router's MAC filter as it has a hardwired connection...is this possibly an issue? I'm not having any trouble reaching the internet, but I'm not exactly a professional network admin...

I figure there's a system setting somewhere that I'm missing, but I can't for the life of me figure out what or where it is.

Halp!

...and ten minutes later I solve it. Made a new user account and presto: access no longer denied, mister wiizard.

The dingbat store clerk that set up my laptop just renamed and unhid the default windows administrator account. I assume there's some kind of permission for remote logon that is denied that account.
